Human Space Systems (HSS) is a world leader in designing and building space-qualified equipment. Since the Apollo program in 1962, HSS has participated in every major NASA manned space program, supplying both the Apollo lunar space suit portable life support system and the Lunar Module environmental control system.
Human Space Systems' also produces the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), or "space suit", used by NASA astronauts to perform Extravehicular Activity (EVA), commonly referred to as space walks. A testimony to its reliability and versatility, is the fact that in recent years more EVAs have been accomplished than in the previous 40 years.
Today, Human Space Systems' has a number of mission critical subsystems on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station (ISS). HSS hardware includes auxiliary power units, actuation, active thermal management equipment, atmospheric temperature, power management, humidity control, air filtration, oxygen generation, water processing and ground support equipment.
Enabling Human Space Exploration has been the company’s core focus for the past forty years. These unique human-centric technical and systems engineering skills continue to be developed as the company incorporates emerging new technologies in the next generation of NASA’s space vehicles, habitats, in-situ resource utilization and human/robotic integration.
We continue to serve and seek important roles in numerous NASA programs and technical areas, including:
- Space Shuttle Program (SSP)
- Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA)
- International Space Station (ISS)
- Engineering and Science Contract (ESC)
- Crew, Robotics and Vehicle Equipment (CRAVE)
- Project Constellation
